The walled city of Morella is a spectacular sight in the Els Ports mountains.
Remains have been found showing that the area dates back to prehistoric times. It is thought that it was one of the first inhabited areas in Spain. Celts, Greeks, Romans and Visigoths have all left their mark on Morella. It was also occupied by the Moors and during this period the castle was rebuilt by El Cid. In 1117 the city was conquered and for the first time was in hands of Christians but this was short-lived as it passed once again into Muslim rule. At last, in 1232, the Arabs were finally expelled and the city was back in Christian hands again.
